<p>Kaha:wi Dance Theatre is excited to announce the appointment of long—time fan and experienced Arts Administrator Cynthia Lickers-Sage as the company’s new General Manager.  Cynthia will be concluding a contract as the Executive Director of Association for Native Development in the Performing and Visual Arts and will formally begin as KDT’s GM on September 1, 2010.</p>
<p>Cynthia is a Mohawk artist from Six Nations, Ontario. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design, she pursued a career in film, video, television and multimedia. She is the co-founder of The Centre for Aboriginal Media and the imagineNATIVE Media Arts Festival.  She enjoys celebrating all Indigenous arts and will draw on her extensive knowledge of the not-for-profit arts sector in her new role, gained through her work with several arts funding agencies including with the Ontario Arts Council, Arts Presentation Canada, and the Canada Council for the Arts.  Cynthia has over 15 years experience in working in an arts administration.</p>
<p>“I’m looking forward to joining the Kaha:wi Dance Theatre team. I’ve been an avid supporter since the beginning and have enjoyed watching the company flourish into a highly respected, world renowned contemporary Aboriginal dance company,” says Cynthia.</p>
<p>Outgoing General Manager Julia Dow and Incoming GM Cynthia Lickers-Sage will work closely together during the month of August to smooth the transition for the organization.</p>

<p>The General Manager (GM) reports to the Artistic Director and Board of Directors of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and manages all administrative duties of the organization, as well as oversees staff and contractors. </p>
<p>The GM works closely with the Artistic Director to implement the artistic mandate, long-term organizational goals and activities and the assessment and implementation of strategic plans. </p>
<p>The GM oversees the daily operations of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre. Responsibilities include budgeting, fundraising, marketing, community and funder relations, long-term planning, corporate sponsorships, and event co-ordination. The position involves a substantial amount of writing, including responsibility for all grant applications. </p>
<p>The GM is expected to work collaboratively, cooperatively and respectfully with all staff and contractors (approximately 20 contract staff), to facilitate timely decision-making, and to foster a creative, productive and equitable work environment.</p>

<p>The General Manager is responsible for all company administration, including:<br />
•         Bookkeeping &#8211; payroll and accounts (familiarity with QuickBooks Pro is an asset)<br />
•         Contracts (ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies such as CAEA) and liaising with legal counsel where appropriate (i.e. especially in terms of rights, royalties and copyrights of artists’ creative work)<br />
•         Annual budgets, financial projections and project budgets<br />
•         Grant management including multiple project, annual organizational grants and other awards<br />
•         Administration/management/planning/evaluation of performance tours<br />
•         General communications with partners, clients, audiences, presenters, etc. and the public including maintenance of website, blog and other e-communications (newsletter) using template software<br />
•         Oversight and management of marketing and publicity including oversight of, contribution to and development of company marketing policies/strategies as well as implementation/execution of strategies<br />
•         Oversight, management and refinement of educational programs including KDT weekly dance class, annual summer Aboriginal Dance Training, youth dance camps, community workshops.<br />
•         Cultivation of fundraising sources in private and public sector including foundations such as Trillium.<br />
•         implementation, review, modification where necessary and execution of Five Year strategic plan in conjunction with board<br />
•         ongoing management and communications with a large number of service providers, consultants, stakeholders, community members, and contractors on artistic and administrative subjects and as it relates to organizational development goals  </p>
<p><strong>Skills</strong><br />
•         Ability to learn new skills quickly<br />
•         Self-directed / takes initiative<br />
•         Proven ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and changing priorities<br />
•         Proven ability to secure support and funds from government, and non-governmental sources<br />
•         Experience in the non-profit sector and working with a volunteer board of directors; and<br />
•         Strong leadership and team management skills, as well as office management experience including staff supervision, financial operations etc.<br />
•         Effective communication skills in various media including superior written and verbal skills, proficiency in computer skills, and an understanding of social networking using technology;<br />
•         Thorough knowledge of Windows Office: Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel<br />
•         Proficient with Adobe Reader/Acrobat<br />
•         Familiarity with QuickBooks or comparable accounting system<br />
•         Skilled E-newsletter preparation and delivery i.e. MailChimp or similar platform; e-blasts.<br />
•         Ability to communicate in both official languages is considered an asset.<br />
•         Experience in Aboriginal affairs/culture is considered an asset.  </p>
<p><strong>Responsibilities<br />
</strong><br />
Some of the tasks below may be delegated to staff or contractors where appropriate and as resources permit. However, the GM is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the tasks are completed. </p>
<p><strong>1. Financial Management</strong><br />
•	Set and manage the organization’s operating budget &#8211; 2010/11 budget projected at over $500K<br />
•	Maintain financial management systems (paper and electronic files and accounts)<br />
•	Manage annual financial audits<br />
•	Ensure all KDT’s activities are adequately funded<br />
•	Protect KDT’s charitable status by ensuring compliance with appropriate government charities regulations<br />
•	Manage payroll and accounts payable and receivable<br />
•	Administer all cash and banking (petty cash, bank deposits, mutual funds, etc.)<br />
•	Prepare invoices and provide receipts<br />
•	Prepare cheque requisitions and cheques<br />
•	Negotiate fees and salaries and manage contracts (including some travel and accommodation arrangements for staff and guests of KDT)</p>
<p><strong>2. Administration &#038; General</strong><br />
•	Manage office staff and all contractors<br />
•	Liaise with Board of Directors<br />
•	Attend Board meetings as required, create meeting agendas with Chair, and take Board minutes as required<br />
•	Work with Artistic Director to create audience development plans<br />
•	Coordinate and chair staff meetings<br />
•	Maintain files (paper and electronic) on all company activities<br />
•	Oversee the planning, installation, and maintenance of all computer systems and software</p>
<p><strong>3. Fundraising / Funder Relations</strong><br />
•	Prepare all grant applications and follow-up reports, including budgets, with input from Artistic Director<br />
•	Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of governmental, individual, and corporate sponsorships/grants<br />
•	Develop fundraising plans/ideas<br />
•	Cultivate and maintain volunteer base<br />
•	Track expenses and revenue for events<br />
•	Manage membership campaigns<br />
•	Create reports summarizing media, logistics, and financial success of events<br />
<strong><br />
4. Communications</strong><br />
•	Represent the organization in primary communications, including with granting/funding bodies, other sponsors, embassies, government agencies, landlord<br />
•	Stay informed as to government policies that may impact KDT and issues in the dance and arts communities more generally<br />
<strong><br />
5. Advertising and Media Relations</strong><br />
•	Develop marketing strategies to increase media coverage<br />
•	Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of all publicity campaigns<br />
•	Negotiate and manage advertising contracts<br />
•	Manage media budget<br />
•	Write public service announcements, news releases, programs<br />
•	Arrange media events<br />
•	Prepare media kits</p>
<p><strong>6. Facilities and Events Management</strong><br />
•	Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of local KDT events (i.e. Living Ritual Festival, Summer Dance Training program)<br />
•	Manage logistics of presentations and fundraising events<br />
Requirements<br />
The successful candidate will have:<br />
•         Minimum 5 years experience in arts management in the not-for profit community with a specific focus on organizational structure and time management<br />
•         A passion and love of the performing arts and Indigenous culture.<br />
•         Strong leadership skills with the ability to organize, empower and motivate staff &#8211; with a variety of skills and levels of experience – to reach goals collaboratively<br />
•         Exemplary organization, time management and administrative skills to set goals and achieve success<br />

One awesome evening of Santee Smith&#8217;s moving contemporary choreography &#8211;from 3 different works&#8211; in the beautiful new National Ballet School studios, PLUS get to know our dancers &#038; chat with the Artistic Director about her inspirations &#038; upcoming tour.</p>
<p>All are welcome to our SPRING FEVER event: a wine/cheese and open rehearsal of our new mixed program &#8220;Kaha:wi&#8221; before we take the show to Global DanceFest in Albuquerque, New Mexico this spring.</p>

<p>Program features selections from repertoire pieces: Here on Earth and Kaha:wi, and the full presentation of A Constellation of Bones, a Maori/Ojibway/Mohawk collaboration (check out video excerpts of those performances <a href="http://kahawidance.org/media.html">here</a>). In honour of the Maori collaboration, this evening will feature a selection of wines from beautiful Aotearoa (New Zealand).</p>
